A New Beginning

Prelude:

It's been several weeks since every citizen on the planet received word of an object hurdling toward the earth.  All the leaders of all the nations have tried everything possible to come up with an idea to thwart the inevitable.  All the Sfi-Fi movies in the past, were just that, "Movies".  Not one of them had any piratical ideas.  The object was bigger than any asteroid.  Telescopes showed, it was larger than any planet in our own solar system.  The greatest minds among mankind could not figure out if the "Object" was an asteroid, a planet or some kind of "Black Hole".  Laser sensor's would reach it, but no information returned.  All our previous satellites had stopped sending back pictures from the edge of our galaxy months ago.  The military leaders sent all matter of explosives toward it months in advance.  Even though the warheads would have run out of gas, they would have exploded on impact.  Government leaders and astronomers alike watched as, when the target was hit, there was nothing.  No evidence of any kind of explosion.

The leaders of the world came to the conclusion, this was the end of mankind and the planet Earth.  There was no need to go underground, but some did.  Locking themselves behind Titanium doors and concrete walls over 50 feet thick.  Like that would really protect them from this.  It would be as if you were going to try to protect yourself by hiding behind a peace of cardboard as a train was about to hit you.

So they informed the masses of the approaching doom.  Although many already knew, due to the information amateur astronomers and conspiracy theorists had leaked over the Internet.  Many people had left countries to return to their families.  Other's took their families and left the cities, because of the lawlessness that ran rampart in them.  Governments collapsed.  Military installations were the only refuge for any law abiding citizens.

A few days before the object was to impact the Earth word came that, if this was a planet or a Black hole, why wasn't it destroying other planets?  Why did it not have any gravitational pull of it's own?  Scientist were truly baffled.  But as cities economies fell, they became depopulated.  Those breaking the law, had all killed each other.  The power sources supplying the great metropolis's of the world seized to run.  The world plunged into darkness.

Food ran out, those that did not flee to the countryside became food for those still in the cities.  People would have welcomed a "Zombie Apocalypse" over what was happening to the world's population.

Impact was now only hours away.  The object was approaching from the dark side of our planet.  Our moon was between the Sun and Earth forming an eclipse somewhere in Canada.  There was no more communication with our Space Station.  The last broadcast just said, "Dear God, this is huge!!!"

Then silence.  No explosion. Nothing.

A lovely young woman, just out of her teenage years, was doing what she enjoyed the most.  Swimming and sunbathing on a beach, of a remote island, in a humongous lake, in southern Canada.  She figured if this was to be the end of the world, she was going to die doing what she loved.  Lying nude on the private beach of her private island.  Her parents bought it years before she was even born.  They passed away a few years ago and left the island to their only child.  It was so remote, that the only way to approach it was by sea-plane.  No roads even went to the lake.  The island was over 50 acres in size.  Had a small farm house and adjacent pole barn on it.  She had planted herself a self-sufficient garden of a couple acres.  Chickens and rabbits were housed in the barn and she possessed three beautiful Clydesdale's, which she used for riding and working on the small farm.

She knew the object was going to hit the far side of the Earth first.  As she watched the eclipse, she figured the end was near.  Under total darkness she grabbed her blanket and covered her shivering nude body.  The wind suddenly stopped.  How strange, she thought.  There was a steady buzzing sound that reverberated throughout the countryside.  Small explosions could be heard way off in the distance.  The young woman could not believe that it could have been from any kind of impact with Earth.  Where were all the earthquakes, the erupting volcano's, tidal waves, tsunami's, that were to accompany the destruction of her beloved Earth?

Instead, there was this persistent buzzing, now, more of a humming, almost like a teapot whistle, then silence. She fell asleep, right there on the beach, wrapped in her blanket.

Few hours later.......

The young maiden awoke to dead silence. Her blanket was gone. She sat up and looked around. Listening. Her dogs!  Why didn't they bark?  They always bark at strange noises.  Oh my God!  What if they were killed?  They were like family to her.  After all, she had no other family.  Both of her parents were an only child, as was she.  Her only family now were her four Great Danes, a two year old male named Odin.  His mate, same age as him, Frigg and their son, Loki and his sister Freyja.  She was always proud of her Norse heritage and it showed in her naming her beloved animals.  She ran to her house, to see what has become of her animals.  As she approached the trail that led to where her house stood, her strongest horse, Sirius, thundered toward her.  They had a special bond.  He galloped straight at her and came to a sudden stop. His cold nose brushed up against her bare breasts.  Her nipples responded with an electrical shock.  She brushed his head away, turned him to his side and grabbed his mane.  The strong steed knew this meant his master and friend wanted to ride him.  He slowly lowered his powerful front legs into a kneeling position, making it easier for his rider to mount.  Once on top of her steed, she turned him toward her homestead.

What greeted her eyes was not what she had expected.  Dogs barking in a distance, became louder.  Her babies were all fine and so happy to see her.  Jumping off of Sirius, her Danes all jumped upon her, so happy she was there.

As she surveyed her surroundings, the only standing structure was that of the stone fireplace that her father had built with stones taken from the plowed fields.  But everything else was gone.  Not destroyed, but GONE!  Vanished.  She looked down the hill to where her plane and boat were always docked.  They too were gone, along with the dock itself.  Rabbits and chickens were running around, free of their confines, as were the other two Clydesdale's.  She slowly walked over to where the barn once stood.  Everything was gone.  No tools to be found.  The farmhouse was gone as well.  No heating oil tank.  No walls, windows, doors, furniture, appliances....clothes!!!  Nothing at all.  No sign that man had ever lived there, except for the dirt patches of where the buildings once stood.

The young nude woman walked around in disbelief, shock and bewilderment.  Stones and twigs stabbing her underfoot.  Lucky for her, she had spent a good part of her youth running  around in the clothes she wore as she entered this world.  The world that was supposed to no longer exist.  This doesn't make sense, she thought.  She was surprised to see the stone well standing.  It too was built by her fathers hands.  Made from what the earth had provided.  Walking nearer to it, it became apparent that only the stone frame work around it was still intact.  No pulley, posts, rope or bucket where anywhere in the vicinity.

The fine young specimen of womanhood looked over the edge of the well, into the clean clear water a few feet below.  She could see her own refection.  She looked around and wondered, what happened to her home?  The world did not end!  She wondered, Did what happen to her, happen to everyone on the planet?...Or was she alone?

Thus begins the adventures of  Eva in the year Zero of our Lord.

Chapter One

All her knowledge about outdoor survival, came from what she had learned while being around her father. She didn't have to worry about water, because of the well.  Besides, there was plenty in the lake, all she had to do was boil it first.  She realized, that she would need "Fire".  How and where will she get fire though? She began looking for anything that she might be able to use to make heat.  There was no glass for her to shine sunlight through on any dried vegetation.  There was no string or rope for her to use to make a bow drill.  No metal that she could use for striking on rocks.  Wait, rocks!  She knew that if she could find the right rocks she could strike them together and make sparks.

After a little while she actually found some flint stones near a limestone deposit at the northern shore of the island along with a few iron nuggets that her father dug up when he built the well.  She gathered some driftwood, old leaves, dried grass and a few dead twigs and placed them in a pile, in the stone fireplace that still stood, next to where her house once stood.  Striking the iron against the flint, a few sparks began to fall from the stone.  Eva brought her fire making instruments closer to the pile.  After a few unlucky attempts, one finally hit it's target.  The grass was the first to ignite.  Blowing on the smoldering grass, the leaves began to catch fire.  She thought this is how the first caveman must have felt when he discovered he could start fire.

Placing the driftwood on her little fire, she soon had a nice inferno to contend with.  She just sat there watching the hypnotizing effect of the orange, yellow an blue-green dancing flames of her natural fire masterpiece. The warmth of the flames felt comforting on her barren skin. The Danes coiled up against her in front of the tranquil scene.

She was still uncertain of what had transpired earlier that day.  From looking around, there seemed to be no evidence of anything that man had made.  Only those that nature had provided.  Take the chimney.  It was still standing.  No man-made materials where used in it's construction.  Eva knew she had to build a shelter or find some and fast, if she were to survive in her own little Eden.  At least her garden was doing well. There were plenty of vegetables for her to eat during the day.  Her animals and pets were able to fend for themselves.

So for the rest of the day, she spent it trying to make some basic tools.  She used various stones and rocks to fashion some makeshift sharpen stone heads.  She found a nice strong axe size handle, split it at one end to hold her so called axe blade made of chiseled stone.  But, she had no string to keep it in place.
Eve walked to the edge of the forested side of the island, began to strip some bark off various trees.  Slowly and methodically tearing them into small pencil width and lengths.  Upon braiding them all together, she looked at her handy work and was quite proud as anyone could see she had made some very nice strong strands of rope.  Anyone alive that is!, she thought to herself.

By the end of the day, she surveyed her accomplishments.  She had several tools on hand.  A hammer of sorts, a well chiseled knife and several axes of various sizes. While she was at it, she also made a couple of spears and a couple if trident like spears for catching fish.  Eve was lucky that it was not going to be a cold night.  She laid near her fire. Eva cleared a place in front of it, covered the bare spot with some grass and other vegetation to absorb her body heat. Her dogs snuggled up with her and drifted off to sleep.  Looking up at the stars, she noticed that there where more than usual.  No flying jet lights could be seen.  Again she wondered if she was all alone on the planet?  The silence was deafening and before she knew it, Eve fell fast asleep.

Chapter Two

As the morning sun crested over the horizon. The sounds of birds could be heard in the distance. Eva awoke. She wiped the sleep out of her eyes. Rubbing them tightly. Her thoughts were, "My what a strange dream." That was until she found herself, still naked, in front of her fireplace. The dogs had risen too. They wondered off, doing what dogs do best.

After placing some more wood on the fire, to ward off the morning chill that had consumed her nude flesh.
So far the weather was cooperating. But Eva knew she would have to build a shelter. With the help of her horses and from some heavy grape vines, she was able to drag many of the dead fallen timbers of her nearby forest to the spot where her home once stood.

Throughout the day, she stacked the timbers on top of one-an-other. Not in your traditional rectangular fashion, but in a triangular form. Once she had  three walls in place, with an opening adjacent to the fireplace, she cut out a door large enough for her and her dogs. She was able to rig a Tipi style roof to her newly built abode.

Now she needed mud to fill in the cracks.
